LTSP 2008 Outstanding Alumnus The Rev. Dr. Lee Miller has died - former board member and Lutheran bishop was 72

The Rev. Dr. Lee Miller
We give thanks for the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Lee M. Miller. Dr. Miller entered life eternal on January 31, 2011 at the age of 72 surrounded by family and prayers.

Dr. Miller served as Bishop of the Upstate New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America from 1992 to 2002.  Prior to that he served the Upper New York Synod of the Lutheran Church in America as Assistant to Bishop from 1976 to 1992 and Mission Director on behalf of the ELCA.  He served as pastor at First, Lockport from 1971 to 1976 and assistant pastor at First, Jamestown from 1965 to 1971.

He served as a school board member in Jamestown and Lockport, convener of the Collegium of the New York State Council of Churches and on many boards of trustees.  These include Lutheran Social Services of Upstate New York in Jamestown, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia and Augsburg Fortress Publishing House, Minneapolis. He was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 2008.

He is survived by his wife Joan, to whom he was married more than 45 years, and their children: daughter Beth Ann and her husband Phillip McCollum and grandchildren Amelia and Damon, son the Rev. Lee M. Miller II and his wife Heather and grandson Griffin; his brother Frank Miller, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-law relatives.

Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, Feb 5, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 3101 Tyson Avenue, Philadelphia, PA  19149.  A second service will be at 5:30 pm on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 873 Dewitt Street, Syracuse, NY 13202.

Notes of condolence may be sent to the Miller family at 6423 Scotland Road, East Syracuse, NY  13057-1529.
