The  Rev. Dr. J. Wendell Mapson, Jr.
The Rev. Dr. Mapson is Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. Also, he has taught at the Palmer Theological Seminary and The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and is former President of the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity.

The Rev. Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes joins LTSP Faculty


The Rev. Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes has joined the faculty of The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) as Associate Professor of Worship and Liturgy. His appointment began July 1.

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Dr. Carvalhaes is a liturgist, theologian, writer, artist, and activist. He did his theological studies at the Independent Presbyterian Theological Seminary in São Paulo, Brazil, and holds a master’s degree in Theology and Literature from Methodist University’s Ecumenical Institute of the Graduate School of Religion in São Paulo. He studied ecumenism in Switzerland at the World Council of Churches and did his doctoral studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

A pastor of the Presbyterian Church USA, he served two churches, one in the outskirts of São Paulo with poor people, and one in Fall River, MA, with an immigrant community for ten years.

He has served on worship teams for the All African Conference of Churches in 2008 in Maputo, Mozambique; the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh in 2010; and several other events and conferences. Dr. Carvalhaes preaches at the Festival of Preaching and has preached in several places in US and abroad. He serves on the board of Rede de Liturgia Conselho Latino Americano de Igrejas (the liturgical board of the Latin American Council of Churches) and TEAR — Journal of Liturgical Resources in Latin America; Cross-Currents Journal, Society for the Arts, Religion and Contemporary Culture, and the Brazilian journal Trópico — Idéias de Norte a Sul. He is also a member of Consultation on Common Texts/Revised Common Lectionary in North America; the American Academy of Religion, and the North American Academy of Liturgy.

He has been part of the Cohort II of the Luce Seminar on Theologies of Religious Pluralism and Comparative Theology at American Academy of Religion, and is now part of the Teaching and Learning Workshop for Pre-Tenure Latino/a Religion Faculty in Theological Schools, Colleges, and Universities.
